  • Ingrid: Maybe when they were kids XD
    October 19, 2014, 12:15:33 PM
  • Alyss: Phoebe wouldn't want Vaness to feel bad either, though, or dress up as something she really, really would rather not wear. Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty have pretty dresses, so she'd be perfectly happy going as one of them. ^_^ (And the puppy dog eyes may end up on Roi to go as Flynn. XD)
    October 17, 2014, 01:04:57 PM
  • Alyss: She does - complete with a little bottom lip wibble. ^^;
    October 17, 2014, 12:59:37 PM
  • Ingrid: I bet Phoebe has the best puppy eyes
    October 17, 2014, 10:40:58 AM
  • Ingrid: Oh no ;_; Now Vaness feels bad
    October 17, 2014, 10:40:49 AM
  • Alyss: Phoebe would probably go as Rapunzel or Sleeping Beauty since they are both "hidden" princesses like her. (But only because Vaness probably won't go as Elsa to her Anna. XD)
    October 17, 2014, 10:35:10 AM
  • Brenna: Phia will dress as a butterfly, because its the last thing anyone will see coming out of the world's biggest tomboy.
    October 14, 2014, 10:54:38 PM
  • Brenna: Doc Lamya would go as the Ghost of Breakfasts Yet To Come, with a bacon and eggs print shroud.
    October 14, 2014, 10:53:31 PM
  • Ru: That is so awesome.  :D
    October 14, 2014, 06:06:48 PM
  • Pixie: Kivan would go as Liberace XD
    October 14, 2014, 05:50:22 AM
  • Ru: Kit I think might be a total geek and dress up as some historical figure her dad taught her about.  And then be a little confused that no one knows who she is.
    October 13, 2014, 06:52:34 PM
  • Ru: Hmm, I think Seren might go as a zombie, just to confuse the hell out of people.  She'd play it totally straight, and people would STILL find her attractive.
    October 13, 2014, 06:50:57 PM
  • Ingrid: Vaness goes as Flame Princess because of all the Elsa jokes
    October 13, 2014, 01:51:42 PM
  • Pixie: Pwyll would perversely go as his sister XD
    October 13, 2014, 07:05:13 AM

Coppelias

Who are the Coppelia?

Cybernetic technology is no new technology.  For centuries now, humans have been creating mechanical parts to augment their natural abilities, or to compensate for physical weaknesses.  Humanoid robots are not new either, though the cost to make them rarely is made up by their usefulness, and so robots are usually found in more efficient forms and sizes.  But one invention, that of a cyborg possessing the body of a robot but the soul of a human, seemed to always elude the human race.  Until now.

The Coppelia are unlike anything ever built before.  The Vegan scientist Dr. Franco Rivkin built the first Coppelia as a vessel to hold the mind and soul of his terminally ill wife, but Sin invaded Arcadia Station before his wife could be transferred, and the robotic body and all of Dr. Rivkin's research was seized by Sin's people.  Unlike previous attempts to make a cybernetic human, his design was elegant and functional, and easy to scale into a giant manufacturing project.  With his research augmenting Sin's own experimentation, she was able to realize her dream of a beautiful cyborg army.  Her Iron Angels, the strongest of the Coppelia, debuted six months after her rise to power, and within a year, she had a force of over 2,000 Coppelia at her disposal.  At the present day, there are about 80,000 Coppelia in the Vegan system.

Coppelias are undeniably robotic in nature.  Their chests do not rise and fall with breath, they do not eat, they 'power down' rather than sleep.  Most don't even bother to blink unless they are specifically trying to act human.  They run on the wireless energy transmitted from globally positioned Telsa coils, or else direct currents if they are low on power.

At the same time, Coppelia are usually crafted to be unique, attractive creatures, and in person, they are awe-inspiring in their abilities and power.  They are billed as the pinnacle of human evolution - they have transcended human needs and base desires, and have become beautiful and perfect.  There are no small number of people who actually want to become Coppelia, wanting that beauty and power for themselves.  A human volunteer is usually given the rank of an officer once converted, and unlike most other Coppelia, they do not undergo brainwashing, and they may keep their original appearance.

But while humans may volunteer to be Coppelia, those persons only make up about 10% of the force.  A majority of Coppelia are forcibly drafted from Orphan Farms, ill persons from hospitals, people in large debts, or captured Resistance rebels.  Sometimes the government also 'scouts' for people who would make excellent elite Coppelia, looking for warriors and charismatic people, then kidnapping them and converting them against their will.  The 'drafted' Coppelia are kept subdued by brainwashing and the use of neural staples, which suppresses mental activity related to memories, emotions, and curiosity.

There are four types of Coppelia models:

Seraphim - This model is the most fragile, but they are also the closest in appearance to being true 'angels'.  Lightweight in design, the Seraphim are the only class of Coppelia which can be outfitted with removable wings, jets, or other gravity-defying devices to enable them to fly.  They are agile and sensitive to the winds, and have quick response times.  As fliers, they are also built to withstand weather and the elements very well, and they are also wired to be able to handle lightening strikes and manipulate electricity.

Because they tend to be delicate, Seraphim are also commonly used for tasks that require creativity, intelligence, or mental precision.  Seraphim,  with their striking wings, are also used in public-facing events and propaganda, while the more combat-ready classes do much of the rougher work.

Additional model ideas and details for Seraphim can be found here.

Cherubim - Built for speed, Cherubim are the swiftest of the Coppelia.  On the land they can run up to 75 MPH, outpacing any living creature on Vega.  Their reaction time is nearly impossible to beat, and their scanning technology is like that of a high-speed camera, able to process stimuli on a micro-second basis.  What they lack in strength they make up with speed and precision, and many are also proficient in close-quarters combat, either bare-handed or with bladed weapons.

Along with Elohim, Cherubim often are used in military and policing duties.  Cherubim are often first-responders, being able to swiftly react to a situation, while Elohim can clean up with their raw strength.   With their speed, they are also used in chases and manhunts.  However, because of all of the power it takes to make them so responsive, Cherubim are more sensitive to overheating and breaking down than the other classes.

Elohim - The strongest and most durable class of Coppelia.  Elohim typically are capable of lifting up a car, and so they are easily able to knock through a riot of opponents with ease.  They are slower, however, and lack the precision of other classes.   Regardless of their height, Elohim are obviously very well-built in appearance, though whether they look like an Amazonian bodybuilder or an ace gymnast is up to their designer.

Like Cherubim, Elohim make up a bulk of the military and police.  They have a reputation for being dumb, which is not true, but often they are docile, and usually get stuck with grunt work.  They are the group least likely to suffer breakages and overheating, and can often survive environmental extremes.  Elohim are also used as heavies in combat, construction, and de-construction capacities - a charged up Elohim is just as bad for a building as a wrecking ball.

Additional model ideas and details for Elohim can be found here.

Grigori -  The least well-known class of Coppelia, Grigori are never mentioned in the same breath as the other three classes - chiefly because the government doesn't even acknowledge their existence.  Grigori are the primary spies in Sin's police state, and live in deep cover among the Civilians.  Hairdressers, homeless people, musicians, reporters, government workers...anybody among them might actually be a Grigori.  Grigori are expected to be great actors who can change their persona as easily as a new face can be installed.  They have other 'tricks' to their body that the other Coppelia don't, like faux blood that runs if they are cut, a device that replicates breathing and metabolism, and artificial sweat glands.

Grigori lack the power, speed, and durability of other classes, but make up for it with their mutability and cleverness.  Grigori are usually trained in stealth, martial arts, and weaponry, making them skilled assassins.  However, because Grigori are constantly in dangerous, deep cover assignments, they are usually under a lot of stress at any time.  They are the class most likely to suffer mental breakdowns, including breakdowns of their neural staples, and so Grigori are usually closely monitored.

FAQ

How much of a Coppelia is human, and how much is mechanical?

Virtually all of the Coppelia's body is mechanical.  In earlier models, the brain was kept organic and intact, but nowadays the brain undergoes a nanonite treatment that replicates the organic neurons in a synthetic form, which preserves the structure and memories within the brain while making it stronger and less likely to get damaged.  Neural staples are used in the brain to suppress thoughts and personality traits which might result in rebellion, but otherwise the human brain is considered valuable and more agile than an AI mind.

What is still 'human' is the soul, heart, and mind.  While a person may be brainwashed and their mind altered while they are being converted into a Coppelia, there is no way to actually subdue their spirit.  All Coppelia contain the potential to remember their previous lives and personalities, it is just a matter of overcoming the neural staples and years of brainwashing to do so.

So how much personality does a Coppelia show?

A person who volunteers to become a Coppelia gets to keep their whole personality intact.  A person who was drafted, in addition to losing their memories, usually has their personality subdued and their emotions dulled.   Their programming becomes a replacement for free will, but this does not mean they have lost all ability to question.  They just lost some of the spirit it takes to fight against that programming.

For example, a drafted Coppelia may be ordered to drown some puppies in the river.  Her programming tells her to kill the puppies, which she accepts immediately (the thought of turning down the command doesn't even occur to most Coppelia).  However, the Coppelia finds that her hands might be shaking a little bit, and her mental processes are a little scrambled, and that she is spending too much time looking in the eyes of the little puppies.  She carries through with her order, but is a bit confused about why her system seemed a bit stalled at the time.  Then she gets her new order, and moves on to her next task without thinking too much about her feelings.  It is when the Coppelia starts to think too much about her feelings and what she is doing that the brainwashing starts to wear down.

Coppelia also show clear differences in their actions based on their personalities.  An impulsive human being is still going to be an impulsive Coppelia, a cautious human is still going to be a cautious Coppelia.  Usually the manufacturers of Coppelia take the human's personality into account when deciding what kind of model she will be, making the impulsive person a Cherubim, or the cautious person a Grigori.  This is not a perfect process, but it usually works.

Is it possible to hack a Coppelia?

Yes, though this can be difficult unless you have the right resources.  Someone who works for Sin's government can easily hack into a Coppelia and program a new mission and priorities for that Coppelia, because the tools are there at hand to do so.  But a Resistance member or layperson will have considerable more difficulty doing so, especially if they have never worked on a Coppelia before.  To hack a Coppelia requires both advanced computer skills as well as knowledge of how a human brain works, which is not a common pair of skills.  But it is possible.

Are there male Coppelia?

Yes, there are just not as many of them.  Only about 20% of the Coppelia forces are male.  This is for two reasons.  The first is that Sin has a simple bias towards females, believing that women are more mentally agile and make for much more beautiful cyborgs.  The second is that the process of turning a human into a Coppelia is extremely stressful and painful, and there is generally a higher success rate in women over men.   This is far from universal, but enough to encourage the manufacture of female Coppelia.

Also, Coppelia are not necessarily crafted to be the same gender they were born to.  A male human may volunteer to become a female Coppelia, for example, or it might be forced upon him.  The reverse does not usually happen.

Can Coppelia only come in the four classes listed?

A vast majority of Coppelia will fall in one of the four categories, but that category is not absolute.  An Elohim might get a modification that enhances their speed, and so they become more like a mix between Elohim and Cherubim than a pure Elohim.

There are also Coppelia who are completely custom, and were not built based on the foundation of any of the four classes.  Notably, Sin and her three bodyguards are all custom-made Coppelia types.  There are other special-class Coppelia that may exist only for certain environments, like mermaid Coppelia suited for deep-sea work, or Coppelia who can operate in the vacuum of space.
