  • Alyss: Phoebe wouldn't want Vaness to feel bad either, though, or dress up as something she really, really would rather not wear. Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty have pretty dresses, so she'd be perfectly happy going as one of them. ^_^ (And the puppy dog eyes may end up on Roi to go as Flynn. XD)

    October 17, 2014, 10:40:49 AM

Because costuming for Coppelias is entertaining, and because I promised Brenna:

Why yes I do look like a zeppelin stewardess

Yes, my wings & goggles don't match. And yes, I am thick everywhere.

Photographer requested that I get my groove on.

Later in the day I got talked into modeling a corset....

It was surprisingly comfy, but I still ain't buying one <3

Not shown here: the vendor from whom I wanted to buy a cool, steampunkish hi-low skirt. Because she did not attend this year; I'll have to get the skirt from her etsy shop.  :-\

Day two, I dressed up real good before breakfast, looked in the mirror, and realized I hated the whole look & didn't want to spill breakfast on it, anyway. So I wore this instead:

Went a little more butch. Ugh, my blacks clash

Fig. 2: Oakland booty, vanilla flavor. And yes, I have the same bun bow/clip in both red and black.

Not sure what was happening here, but we may have been downwind of the grilled-onion hotdog vendors.

Not pictured here: me in the Day 1 costume, flipping the bird & making grotty faces at Arcadian rebel scum. Saving those for potential dating profile purposes.  ;)

Srsly guys, if I ever walk up to you and start babbling about various celebrities, you can put a bullet in my head, 'cuz that's a pod person.  Failure at popular media is one of my distinguishing characteristics.   :-\

Navigational Display / Coppelias: Cherubim
« on: June 28, 2014, 08:11:47 PM »
Cherubim are absolutely the fastest things on two legs.  They're generally smaller than the Elohim, and closer in size to average human heights; their strength, while superhuman, is less than an Eloi's because their power is focused more on speed than on strength.*  Unfortunately their outstanding speed makes them more vulnerable to overheating than any other type of Coppelia.

Cherubim are also characterized by their cleats; their formal footwear is also cleated, and the public speculates their hypothetical bunny slippers would also bear cleats.  Like the Seraphim, much of their weaponry can be built-in: fangs, claws, talons, retractable metal fingernails, assorted small blades, and occasionally even horns.  Cherubim weaponry that isn't sharp in some way is exceedingly rare.  Spurs are not favored, however, because they add weight to the feet, and can trip up a runner.

These Coppelia are the bad cops.  Specifically, they are The Bad Cops: the force that makes the KGB look like Barney Fife.  Cherubim have no Good-Cop/Bad-Cop routine; they have edited the strategy to Bad-Cop/Worst-Nightmare.  They learn very quickly to get respect and results through physical viciousness, but to win promotion they have to learn a much more subtle kind of nastiness.  Cheubim have an unspoken code regarding violence among themselves: it is absolutely forbidden in public, and in front of other types of Coppelia; but in private, for excellent reasons, and especially when it's easiest to conceal, conditions are somewhat less strict.

Although they have the worst public image and a reputation for being difficult, no records exist of a Cherubim having ever attacked another type of Coppelia.  Either it has never happened, or the incidents have been expunged.  Individual Cherubs working with Seraphs or Elohim must be evaluated case by case, because there is no reliable means for predicting Cherub sociability.

Additionally, the public impression of Cherubim is subconsciously that of a pack-hunting predator--somehow a solitary Cherub is considered significantly more approachable than a pair or a group.

*Because they have essentially the same actuators, a Cherub in a pinch can express the brute power of an Eloi by running as hard & fast as she can at her target, but because her frame is much lighter, she risks breaking apart on impact.

The Gazelle
The long-distance track star.  Not the fastest, but able to go much farther than other models before overheating.  Unless you're an experienced marathoner, she will catch you.  Usually the tallest Cherub model, but not always.

Think: supermodels, shoujo manga heroines, greyhounds, giraffes.

The Cheetah
Absolutely the fastest: the Cheetah model is supposedly capable of reaching speeds up to 100mph, although this result is heavily contested.  Being able to reach higher speeds than other Cherubim, however, means she can overheat much faster, so it's common practice for a Cheetah to take a running leap in an attempt to tackle her quarry, rather than burn out and lose it.

Think: Olympic sprinters, champion twerkers, zebras... & again, I am too het to know offhand of celebrities with rockin' booties.  ^^;

The Vixen
This lightweight model is the only one designed with parkour in mind.  She can go places even the Greta can't, and very quickly.  Althought the Vixen lacks the weight to accelerate like a Cheetah, the same approximate strength gives her the greatest high jump and long jump of any Coppelia.  Sometimes mistaken for a Sylph.

Think: ninjas, foxes-?  ...Honestly, I don't know anyone in the entire world with this physique.  I'm certain there is someone, but the rest of you are more likely to know her than I.  sorry

What if a naturally disruptive and contrary person is allocated an Elohim body?

There would be some heavy questions for QC about why she wasn't a Cherub... and she'd get either solo duties--not so rare either--or teamed only with Cherubim until the issue could be resolved.  In the meantime, a summer movie would happen.

Navigational Display / Coppelias: Elohim
« on: January 05, 2014, 09:00:39 PM »
Elohim are the strongest and most durable of Coppelias, and usually the largest as well.  They're the slowest, owing to their size and weight, but with enough space and time they can get up to a respectable 20mph.  After the Seraphim, they're second best at electrical manipulation: the four sockets in an Eloi's back are expressly for powering whatever can be plugged in--including a Seraph's weaponry, if necessary.  Elohim have no built-in weaponry of their own, because they can pick up nearly anything around them and use it as a bludgeon.  If there's a vehicle one of them can't pick up, she can at least overturn it.

This class of Coppelia has the very best public relations, owing to their roles in disaster* relief efforts, and some excellent propaganda shots of kitten rescues.  There is an assumption among the public that their intelligence is below average, because old stereotypes die hard, and although (or perhaps because) this is nearly never the case, they're almost as successful at sensitive data collection as the Grigori.

Besides physical strength and public opinion, the Elohim also excel at teamwork, both with their fellows and with others.  This class of Coppelia experiences fewer conflicts and less tension within groups, and are thought to suffer the least number of stapling errors.

The Bertha

The earliest model, still the strongest, and nearly all of them still in use.  The shortest of this model are the height of an average man; the tallest approach eight feet with their boots on.

Think: She-Hulk, Olympe Maxime, any female bodybuilder

The Helga

Actually the newest model, the Helga has sacrificed some raw power in favor of speed and maneuverability.  She makes up the difference with the torque and leverage afforded by her wide-set hips and shoulders.  This model is approximately man-height, and has no problems with doorways.

Think: Lucy Lawless, Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, Chun-Li, female Olympic swimmers

The Greta

Basically a scaled-down version of the Bertha, the better to fit into places other Elohim cannot, with all the power her frame can withstand.  Most are below average-woman height, the shortest are around four foot six.

Think: female Olympic gymnasts, female dwarves... & I'm sorry I don't know any famous women who are short and muscular  x__x;

*natural or otherwise

Ouf.  Text below picture next time, I think.   :P

Navigational Display / Coppelias: Seraphim
« on: December 29, 2013, 08:35:57 PM »
Seraphim are the only Coppelias designed specifically for flight.  This is why, although they're the most physically fragile of all Coppelia designs, they can readily withstand lightning strikes that would blow other models apart.  These girls are built to be lightweight thunder goddesses--sensitive to the weather, while utterly impervious to it.  Auxiliary weaponry are built into their arms and legs, sometimes including compound bows, guns, blowguns, or even slingshots.

The six holes in a Seraph's back are power sockets where any combination of wings and weaponry can be plugged in, although it is highly recommended that both wings be the same type, because balance is important--however, if two or more pairs of wings are deployed, they may be of different types, so long as each wing is properly mated.  Staggering of mated pairs of wings is advised against except for very advanced fliers.

Seraphim eyes, in the beginning, were based very closely on the eyes of raptors, the better to equip high-altitude Coppelias with powerful long-range vision, but they left little to no room in the skull for upgrades to other hardware, and some models were frustratingly delicate and expensive.  Not all Seraphim fly, however, and some older models retired from flight assignments might still be found working as electricians, flight traffic controllers, meteorologists, et cetera, still making use of their trademark "eagle eyes."

Newer models may need no eyes at all!  Sonar and thermovisual sensory prototypes are in development, as are actual feathered wings.  Current wing models include bat wings, dragonfly membrane sets, heli rotors, and fixed and semi-fixed gliders.  Seraphim uniforms/outfits are necessarily backless, nearly always with a large, full skirt, or emphatically flared pant legs to provide drag as needed.

Difficult conditions for Seraphim include fog, smog, forest fires, sideways rain, and volcanic eruptions.  Standard operating procedure for most inclement weather is simply to fly above it--this is why volcanic eruptions are absolutely the worst.

The Sylph
The earliest Seraph model, still the most numerous, and most associated by the public with flying Coppelias.  Early versions were short as professional jockeys; more recent ones are closer to human average, but still largely diminutive.  The Sylph is still the the primary base for most concept bodies.

Think: shoujo manga heroines, Kate Moss, Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn

The Apsara
As the first model to incorporate buoyant helium foam insulation, the Apsara could afford a slightly more robust frame.  Nearly all of this model fall within normal human height range.

Think: Storm, Rogue, pretty much all other gravity-defiant comic book superheroines

The Tennyou
The Tennyou is chock-full of helium insulation, making it the most durable and gravity-resistant model.  While this enables them to use heavier weaponry than other Seraphim, it provides some difficulty travelling at ground level without wings, because Tennyou do not have enough weight to reach the ground on their own.  The most common solution is simply to tether themselves to small, remote-controlled ballast vehicles.

Think: Rosie O'Donnell, Oprah at her widest, Ursula the sea witch, Venus figurines

I would love to see a story where the male senshi (and Veles) get together to do MANLY things, except that it's, well, their idea of manly

MANLY!  Like David Bowie makeup!   ;D

Re: The Cradle, where Coppelias have to go every so often for maintenance.  Is there just one in the whole solar system, one per planet, one per garrison, or are we even holding on to that concept?

I'm mostly interested in the low-tech high-tech, if that makes any sense.  Stuff like wind cars, things built from living trees.. but also leftover bits of cunning from the first-gen settlers which have been kicked into the shadows by the current regime.   8)

In hindsight, I should have drawn him chibiform in the first panel, too.  Ehh, next time.

What I wouldn't give for a comic of him getting meatball bun hair!  Or Super Saiyan hair.  Or...bald...

Someday in the distant future, I want to draw up all the various identities he's used since Ida.  Then we'll see if he'll cringe or swagger.   ;)
